Our guide to the Best Fish & Chips in Scarborough
Scarborough and fish & chips go hand in hand, and everyone has their own memories of the perfect seaside plate. Among the many chippies in town, these are the ones that still capture that timeless Scarborough feeling — crisp batter, fresh fish and that unmistakable taste of the coast. Our top picks for 2026 bring together the places we return to again and again.
Lifeboat Fish Bar is a small, traditional, family‑run fish and chip shop and café just off the seafront near the lifeboat station. It’s the best fish and chips we know — consistently fresh, perfectly cooked and served with the kind of efficiency that keeps everything moving even when it’s busy. You can eat in the little café at the back or take them away in a box to enjoy on the seafront… just keep an eye out for the seagulls — they’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for you.
Top tips... If it looks busy, be patient, it is well worth the wait.
Mother Hubbard’s has that unmistakable Scarborough charm — a traditional, family‑run fish and chip restaurant where everything feels just as it should. It’s the kind of place where a proper haddock and chips with a pot of tea just feels right, though there are other options on the menu if you fancy something different. A real Scarborough institution.

North Bay Fisheries is a fantastic, highly‑rated takeaway and a real favourite with locals. It can get busy, but they run things so smoothly that you’re never waiting long. Grab your box and wander into Peasholm Park or head down to the beachfront to enjoy them in true Scarborough style… and, as always, watch out for those seagulls — they’ll be watching you.
Top tips... Enjoy in Peasholm Park or on the beach front - large portions are good for sharing.
Catch 55 is one of Scarborough’s newest fish and chip restaurants, opening in May 2024 on Eastborough, close to the bottom end and just a short stroll from the beach. It’s a large, modern, fully licensed restaurant with fantastic views over the South Bay, offering a more contemporary take on the classic chippy while still keeping the focus firmly on fresh fish and crisp batter. You can eat in or take away, and it’s quickly become a strong addition to Scarborough’s fish and chip scene.
Top tips... If you are dining in, book a table with a sea view.
